Homebrew spell

Homebrew · guide 7 of 11

A spell your wizard invented, or one that only exists in your world. Make it once, and it turns up on the right spell lists, just like the official ones.

Start a new spell

On your Build page, press Homebrew, choose the Spells tab, and press New spell.

Homebrew, on the Spells tab

Describe the spell

Give it a name, which can't be the name of an official spell. Choose its level and its school of magic, and describe what it does. If it gets stronger with a higher slot, or as the caster levels, say how under At higher levels.

How it is cast

Under How it is cast, type the casting time, range and duration as they'd be printed, like one action, sixty feet, or concentration, up to one minute. Tick its components: verbal, somatic and material, and name the material if there is one. Then tick whether it needs concentration, and whether it can be cast as a ritual.

Which classes have it

Next, Which classes have it. Tick the official classes, or your own homebrew classes, and the spell goes on their lists when a player picks spells, and into Reference. Tick none if you'd rather add it to a character by hand.

Spells that make a creature

For a spell that summons a creature or changes someone's shape, like Find Familiar or Polymorph, use Makes a creature, so the sheet can add the creature or the form for you.

Save it

Choose where it comes from, and press Save. Your spell is ready for the next character who learns it.
