Homebrew species
Homebrew · guide 2 of 11
Your world has a people the rulebook never dreamt of. Build them as a homebrew species, and your players can choose them in the character creator, just like an elf or a dwarf.
Start a new species
On your Build page, press Homebrew, choose the Species tab, and press New species.
The species itself
Start with the species itself. Give it a name, which can't be the name of an official species. Elf is taken, but Elfling is fine. Add a description, then its size and its speed.
Traits
Next come the traits: what the species can do. To start from an official trait, pick it from the list and change the details, like Darkvision at ninety feet. Its name stays, and everything else is yours.
For anything new, press Add a new trait, name it, and say what it does.
What it changes
Under What it changes, tell the app what to work out from a trait. Choose a change to add: a bonus to Armour Class or speed, a skill or tool proficiency, a resistance, a language, and plenty more. The sheet then does the maths for you.
Feats, skills and spells
A trait can also give a feat, let the player choose skills, or give spells, from the level you choose.
Ability score increases
Ability score increases are off to start with, because in the 2024 rules they come from the background. Tick the box if you want an older-rules species, and its characters get the species' increases instead.
Where it comes from
Under Where it comes from, choose My own work, or From a published source and say which one. Only your own work can be shared to the DM-atabase.
Save it
Press Save. You can come back and edit it at any time, and the change reaches every character of that species straight away.
That's a homebrew species. Your world's peoples, ready for your players to bring to life.
