Making a scene

Building your story · guide 2 of 5

A scene is one moment of your story: where it happens, who's there, and what you'll read out. The scene wizard walks you through it one step at a time, so nothing gets forgotten.

Start a scene

On Create campaign, press Add scene under the act you want. The new scene goes at the end of that act.

First, give it a name, like The drowned sacristan, and press Next. Every press of Next saves your work, so you can leave and carry on later from the same step.

Where

Pick the location from the list. Every scene needs one, because running the scene moves the party there. If it isn't made yet, press New location, and once it's made, it's put in this scene for you.

Who's there

Add any NPCs the party can meet, like Brother Ilsen. Each one saves as soon as you add it.

What happens

Here you can add an encounter, a puzzle, a combat and shops. Filling a scene covers these, so for now, press Next.

Plot thread

Link the scene to a story, like The Cinderfall Conspiracy, or leave it as None if the scene stands alone.

Read-aloud and notes

The read-aloud is what you say to the players when the scene starts, and it's waiting for you on the Run screen. Prep notes are just for you. Players never see them.

Review

Review shows everything in one place. Press a step along the top to go back and change it, then press Finish.

Change a scene later

To change a scene later, press its name. Edit scene opens with the same steps, and your changes save each time you press Next.

Branches

Editing adds one more step: Branches. These are suggested next scenes, for when the party could go more than one way. Choose a scene, add a choice label, like If they follow the smugglers, and a note for yourself if you like, then press Add branch.

Branches, with a scene, a choice label and a note

Branches sit on top of your running order without changing it. On the Run screen, they show as suggested paths under the scene, and one press runs the scene they lead to. So when your players go off script, you're ready.

Edit all on one page

Prefer to see everything at once? Press Edit all on one page. The name, location, plot thread, read-aloud and notes save when you press Save scene. Everything else saves the moment you change it.

Edit all on one page

Build each moment once, and it's ready whenever your table gets there.
