Logging notes during play

Running a session · guide 6 of 7

Things happen fast at the table. The session bar at the bottom of the Run screen lets you write them down as they happen, so nothing is forgotten by next week.

A session starts by itself

You never have to start a session. One starts by itself as soon as play does: when you run a scene, move the party, or save your first note. The bar then shows the session's number.

Before play starts: no session yet, and the last session's recap
Once play starts, the bar shows session 7

Write a note

Click in the box, and the tags open beneath it. Type what just happened, in a few words.

Link names to it

Type the full name of an NPC, a place, a faction or a character from this campaign, and Critsmith offers it as a tag. Press it to link that name to the note.

Pick what kind of note it is

Then pick what kind of note it is: Character, Loot, Plot, Combat, Location or Other. Pick as many as fit. Press Save, and the bar clears, ready for the next one.

Notes for your eyes only

Some notes are for your eyes only. Switch on DM only, and that note never appears in the recap your players see.

Forgot to tag one?

If you press Save with no tags at all, the bar asks once. Press Save again to keep it as it is.

Your log fills itself in

Every note is stamped with the scene that was running. And Critsmith writes some lines for you, like a fight's result, a rest, or gold and XP handed out. So your log fills itself in, even on busy nights.

End the session

When the night is over, press End session. The bar asks first, because any fight still running ends with it. Press End session again, or Keep playing if you pressed it by mistake. Ending the session also stops the scene that's running.

The bar asks before the session ends

The bar then offers that session's recap. Turning your notes into a recap has its own guide: The session log and player recaps.
